Kids benefit just as much as adults when they practice yoga regularly, and more schools across the country are starting to integrate yoga into students' daily routines.

When kids do yoga, they increase their confidence, manage their stress, and improve their ability to focus.

Consider adding yoga into your child's routine with a kids yoga DVD.

The best yoga DVD for kids makes yoga accessible and aids their developing mind and body.

Our favorite Yoga DVDs for Kids:

Why Choose a DVD Geared Towards Kids?

If your child is anything like mine, they probably hang in there with your home practice for 10 to 15 minutes before they lose interest and go on to something else.

An adult-oriented yoga practice is mostly asana driven, and a typical kid needs more than a physical practice to stay intrigued.

A DVD made for kids is much more than the poses; oftentimes, these DVDs include some kind of story so the child is acting out a story instead of going quietly through a series of postures.

Before you purchase a DVD, look for some of the following features.

#1 Variety of Routines

This is an especially important feature if you have multiple children and they vary in physical skills.

If you've got one child who's very athletic and takes to things quickly but their sibling is a bit more clumsy, you'll definitely want a video that offers a decent variety of routines, modifications, and instructional levels.

#2 Fast Paced Flows

You might love a slow-paced yin or restorative class, but getting your four-year-old to stay in a pose longer than 15 seconds is going to be like bathing a cat.

Plus, it never hurts to involve your child in an activity that will burn off some of their bottomless energy.

#3 An Engaging Instructor

It takes a special soul to fully engage a child with their personality alone, so you should be as picky with the instructor as your child would be.

Read reviews and look for a teacher who's lively, upbeat, and engaging to kids of all ages.

A monotone, soft-voiced person is going to lose your kid's interest in less than five minutes. Avoid a video where the teacher does a lot of talking without getting your kids involved in any kind of movement.

A good kids' practice will have very little talking or instruction unless your kids are being asked to move at the same time.

I love this DVD because it takes your kids on a few different adventures using yoga poses.

I think being able to string together poses and create a tale is the best way to keep littles fully engaged and interested in what's coming next.

  • The DVD consists of nine "chapters" ranging in length from three to five minutes.
  • Kids go on an African safari, navigate a thunderstorm, and explore a garden through simple yoga poses.
  • The short chapters and ability to string them together makes this suitable for kids of all ages and attention spans.
  • The only person on the screen is the teacher, so there are no kids for your child to follow.
  • No background scenes or colors, so kids needing more stimulation might lose interest quickly.

You can join your kids in their yoga practice, too! The instructor takes your kids through two adventures: Condor Trek and Save the Whale. I found myself fully invested in each of these adventures.

  • Interactive storytelling keeps your kids moving through a fairly fast paced flow.
  • A portion of all sales goes towards saving whales and protecting the planet from global warming.
  • You'll end up participating in the video with your kids quite frequently because it's so well instructed.
  • A lot of the poses aren't necessarily traditional yoga postures, so if that's important, this isn't the DVD for you.
  • The graphics are a bit cheesy, so more discerning kids might not appreciate it.
  • There isn't a whole lot of instruction involved and it moves fairly quickly, and this could make following along difficult for some kids.

This DVD has three levels of classes: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. This is a great choice if you have kids of all ages that are interested in yoga.

  • This is a great choice for older kids, and it's recommended for kids up to the age of 14.
  • Instead of a bland studio, the videos are all filmed in Sedona, Arizona, for a unique, colorful backdrop.
  • The classes are fun, led by kids of all ages, and build strength and flexibility on the fly.
  • Each class has a significant number of poses, so it's a very fast moving class.
  • The poses are not ideal for beginner yogis, so this is more of a step up for kids who have done yoga before.

This DVD is made for teens and focuses on developing their social and emotional skills.

  • There are five 30-minute practices, 18 mini sequences, five breathing exercises, and two relaxation routines.
  • The music is upbeat and modern to avoid turning teens off of yoga.
  • The classes are led by teenagers, keeping the DVD accessible and hip.
  • The title of the DVD might turn skeptical teens off.
  • While it says it's for kids up to age 14, it's really suited for older elementary kids and middle schoolers.

Sick of doing the same DVD for little kids every day? Spice things up with a DVD made for the whole family.

  • The yoga sequences incorporate dancing, singing, and jumping, not just yoga.
  • Choose between relaxing/meditative and high energy/silly depending on your kids' moods.
  • The yoga poses are excellent for expelling the energy of more rambunctious children.
  • The sequences are fast paced, so younger kids might have a hard time following along.
  • The instructor isn't the best at verbal cues.
  • This DVD isn't the best for complete beginners, especially if the adults are beginning yogis.

Choosing the best yoga DVD for kids is dependent on your child's capabilities. Take the time to read reviews or rent them before dropping the cash on them.

While a DVD seems like a good choice for your child, their opinion may differ completely.
